How Our Sustainable Materials Are Made

At Vitus Bags, we design with purpose.

Our bags are crafted from cactus leather, an innovative plant based material that combines sustainability with lasting durability and a refined, modern aesthetic. It allows us to create timeless designs with a lower environmental impact while preserving the look and feel of traditional leather.

1. The origin: Nopal cactus

Everything begins with the nopal cactus, also known as prickly pear, grown in Mexico.

This plant thrives naturally in dry climates. It requires very little water and no pesticides or irrigation, making it one of the most sustainable raw materials available today.

2. Responsible harvesting

Only mature cactus leaves, called pencas, are carefully harvested by hand.

The cactus itself remains intact and continues to grow, allowing it to be harvested again every six to eight months. This regenerative process protects the plant and supports long term sustainability.

3. Naturally dried by the sun

After harvesting, the leaves are cleaned and laid out under the sun to dry for several days.

This step uses no additional energy. It reduces moisture naturally while concentrating the fibers that give the material its structure.

4. Extracting natural fibers

Once dried, the cactus is processed into a pulp.

The natural fibers and proteins are separated and refined. These fibers are essential, as they create the strength and durability needed for a leather like material.

5. Creating cactus leather

The extracted fibers are combined with bio based polymers to form a flexible and durable material.

This process transforms the cactus into a smooth surface that can be shaped, dyed, and finished. The result is a high performance alternative to traditional leather.

6. Color, texture, and finish

The material is formed into sheets and finished with eco friendly dyes.

Different textures and colors can be achieved, allowing each Vitus bag to have a modern, refined look while maintaining a natural origin.

7. From cactus leather to handcrafted Vitus bags

The finished cactus leather is cut, stitched, and assembled into bags.

Because the material behaves similarly to traditional leather, it can be crafted with precision and attention to detail, resulting in pieces that are both functional and elevated.
